mr.coon, known as Gerhard Martini, was born in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy in 1972. He visited the Academy of Graphic Arts in Florence. At that point, he began to feel his true passion with music.
He was born in this world in 1972 under the name Gerhard Martini. But as mr. coon, he has somehow musically detached himself from the here and now. Not from this world, which of course always sounds very highfalutin, but anything else would be an understatement. Before you enter his home studio, you feel like Alice in Wonderland. You follow the rabbit down his hole and immediately find yourself in a fantastic environment. How does he manage that? His discreet answer is: ‘I can just do it.’
In 1998 he had his first live performance, he and the music had learnt to love each other, were happy and things seemed to be going uphill. But then came the shocking turn of events. Whilst on the road delivering pizzas in Florence, a terrible accident happened. He crashed into another vehicle and suffered a traumatic brain injury. He spent a whole three months in absolute oblivion. It was like pulling the plug, he says. For him, it was like being on holiday, freed from all the problems and worries that life brings. We come from nothing and end up right there again. So why worry about what comes after death or cling to anything supernatural? Thoughts no longer exist.
Simply nothing, nothing at all. Although the doctors no longer believed it, he came back. Not just somehow, but with a huge fit of laughter. The holiday was over, hard times were ahead of him. He fought his way back to life and did impressively well, as you can see. Music was still by his side, more than ever. A normal job was no longer an option, the possibilities of electronic music seemed endless to him. Just like the melodies in his head. His first album ‘Die Träumer’ (‘The Dreamers’) was created, along with countless collaborations with artists from every conceivable genre. From rappers, performance artists, singers, pianists and so on … The doors to his world are now open, even if many don’t realise it. He also trained as a music designer at the Musik- und Akademie Deutsche Pop für Musik und Medien in Hamburg.
Ich befinde mich wieder einmal auf meiner üblichen Suche. Meine übliche Suche nach ignorierten Klängen in diesem Land. Mein Riecher führt mich dieses Mal nach Terlan. Nebenbei, was für eine Affenhitze. Der Schweiß rinnt mir literweise vom Kopf bis an die Zehen.
